After a successful and uneventful annual, the Buckeye Wing has started a busy summer schedule. We conducted two flyovers in May, including the Hoosier 100 at the Lucas Oil Raceway Park in Indianapolis, IN. In June, we supported the D-Day Commemoration at Lunken Airport in Cincinnati. The Queen even stopped by! The Queen Mother will be at the Columbus Airshow June 16 - 18.
If you missed us at the Columbus Airshow, stop by June 24th at KMRT or the Freedom Fly-In on July 22nd. See the event schedule for other opportunities.
CAF members regularly and generously donate both their time and money to support the mission of the Commemorative Air Force. Let the CAF Buckeye Wing benefit from your knowledge and experience! Whether you are an accountant, teacher, mechanic or pilot, the Buckeye Wing can put your unique talents to good use. There are many opportunities to volunteer, including airshows and events.
Collecting aircraft for nearly a half a century, the CAF now ranks as one of the largest air forces in the world. Today the CAF has approximately 13,000 members and a fleet of more than 175 aircraft representing more than 60 different types—including planes from several foreign countries and other military conflicts since World War II. The Headquarters of the CAF is located in Dallas. Founded in 2022, the CAF Buckeye Wing was established to recognize the crucial role that Ohio has played in aviation history while offering local members the opportunity to support the CAF mission and its growing air force.
The Buckeye Wing acquired a 1943 Fairchild PT-26 with a Ranger 400C engine on May 24, 2022. Our airplane was a primary trainer for Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) throughout WWII. Provided to the RCAF via the Lend Lease agreement, the PT-26 was responsible for training a number of the 8864 Americans who joined the RCAF prior to the US involvement in WWII. (Of note, 37 Ohioans were KIA while serving in the RCAF). The aircraft underwent a significant restoration in 2002 and is sporting the RCAF livery. Wing training is underway and we hope to be flying within the next couple months. If you want to stop by KMRT and take a look, please contact us using the email address below.
